Planning a cake smash session...

So...the time has come and your baby is getting ready to turn one!  Many parents choose to mark this occasion with a cake smash session.  These sessions are a fun way to celebrate that first year of life!  The post will help you decide if this session is right of your little one and what to expect before, during and after the session.

Cake smash sessions aren't for every baby.  If your child doesn't like getting dirty, messy hands or is extremely shy in front of strangers you may want to consider waiting till they are a bit older for a session.  However, most little ones enjoy these sessions.  It may take them a couple minutes to warm up to the idea but that's not a problem!

Before your session

When you schedule your session is up to you!  Some clients like to use the images for birthday invitations and some use them as thank you cards.  It is best to contact Foothills Photography at least a month before you wish to schedule.  This give adequate time to make plans.  

After your session is scheduled we will work together to decide on colors/theme/outfits.  I work closely with a local baker to get your custom cake ordered.  If you don't have ideas...that's fine!  I have lots of ideas and can always put together a great session!  If you are interested in purchasing an outfit for your session there are some great vendors on etsy.  The studio does keep tutus, headbands, ties and rompers on hand for you to choose from also!

During your session

Cake smash sessions are broken up into several different components.  The first part of your session includes poses in any outfits that you want to use but that you don't want to get dirty.  This is usually when clients decide to use the outfits custom made or special family outfits.  We then change baby into their cake smash outfit.  During this time parents sit down on either side to keep baby from crawling all over.  These images are very candid.  I let baby decide when to eat, what to eat and how much.  It does take them a couple minutes to get used to the cake...especially if they have never had it before.  The last part of the session is the clean-up!  Your little one will enjoy a little bath to get all cleaned up.  

After your session

Approximately 7-10 days after your session you will come back into the studio to select your package and place any print or product orders.  The most popular products for cake smash sessions include 3x3 mini accordion albums, 10x10 collages, invitations and thank you cards and wall prints.
